Having talked to many people in my age group. i discovered a lot of people do not really know about post exposure prophylaxis for HIV. so as a microbiologist that i am now....... i decided to write a short essay on my blog to educate a few peeps out there
PEP is a short term antiretroviral treatment that must be taken 72 hours after suspected contact with the virus. Now the Mechanism of Hiv virus is that it first binds to the cell wall of the body cells before it penetrates then uses the cell component to replicate itself
now what PEP does is that it prevents the virus from actually binding to the cell wall thereby eliminating the chances of getting the virus.
PEP treatment can be used in emergency situations like sharing contaminated needles, in sexual assault, or during occupational hazards. i know for sure that the department of virology university of ibadan teaching hospital gives PEP treatment.
